カナダのMAID「死ぬことの医療支援」（medical assistance in dying）は、超高齢化した日本社会、債務危機が予想される世界で、超高債務依存の日本政府に一つの決断を迫るものです。
The Economistの記事は冒頭で、安楽死を人間の権利として認めるべき事例を紹介します。
・・・アンドラ・デモンティニーさんは、若年性アルツハイマー病により、たくましい家長だった運動神経の持ち主の父親が、ボロボロの抜け殻のような男に変貌するのを見守った。病気が進行すると、抑えきれないエネルギーで壁にぶつかったり、床をあてもなく這ったりするようになった。父親は53歳で亡くなり、顔には悔しさの涙が流れていた。

さまざまな症状があると思います。私が知る限り、認知症は長期の介護を要します。10年、あるいは、20年、それ以上も。そのコストを支払う貯蓄をできる人は非常に限られているでしょう。あるいは、家族や親族が担い、自宅で支援を受けながら介護します。多くの介護者が仕事をあきらめ、孤独になってしまいます。
誰が、どのようなケースが、安楽死にふさわしいか？ だれが、いつ、どのように判断するのか？ 病気の治療や痛みの緩和は十分か？ 入院や介護のコストが支払えないせいで、安楽死を強制されるのではないか？ たとえ強制しなくても、貧しい人は家族を救うために安楽死を期待され、家族も選択するのではないか？ 社会を改善・選別する発想、障碍者、精神異常、犯罪者の排除、人種差別や優生学の歴史を無視するのか？
・・・2016年、医師による安楽死が認められた最初の年に、1,000人強のカナダ人がそれを選択した。2023年までにその数は15,343人に増加し、その年のカナダの死亡者数326,571人の4.7％を占めた。
・・・フランス語圏のケベック州ほどMAIDを急速に導入している地域はない。同州で医師の介助を受けた死亡者の割合は、2023年、7.2％に達した。
・・・レスペランス医師は、MAIDの患者は自分たちの生活が改善する見込みがないことはわかっているが、「死ぬと分かる15分前には笑顔になる。話をしたり、ワインを飲んだり、家族にどれだけ愛されているかを伝えたりする」と話す。レスペランス医師は、患者が亡くなってから少なくとも 1 時間は家族と一緒にいる。家族からの質問にはすべて答える。しばしば、家族はレスペランス医師を抱きしめる。

苦しみながら死を恐れていた女性（男性）が、夫（妻）や子供たちと楽しい人生について話し合い、安心して死を迎える。そういう死を権利として認める社会になるときが、来たのかもしれません。
高齢者医療と安楽死について、さまざまな議論を深めて、具体的なケースを検証してほしい、と思いました。社会保障費の増大と若者の可能性を奪う投資不足は、日本の「老人政治」を危うくするポピュリスト的対立に変わるかもしれません。
